Anthony Albanese, the leader of the Labor Party, is set to become Prime Minister of Australia for a second time after a landslide victory in the national election held on Saturday (April 3). The center-left leader won the election with strong support.

According to the latest updates, 49.7% of the votes have been counted so far. The Labor Party has won 86 seats, while the Liberal-National Party (LNP) coalition secured 40 seats. Independent candidates have won 10 seats. Although the left-leaning Green Party has not won any seats yet, it is expected to perform better than ever before.

Voting began at 8am local time. There were 18 million registered voters, and a record 8 million of them voted early. Elections were held for 150 seats in the House of Representatives and 40 out of 76 seats in the Senate.

In his victory speech, Anthony Albanese said, “With hope and determination, and by trusting each other, we are returning to the work of building Australia’s future. Thank you all.”

On the other hand, opposition leader Peter Dutton accepted defeat and congratulated Albanese. He said the main reason for their loss was not running a strong enough campaign. Dutton added, “This is a historic win for the Labor Party, and I congratulate Albanese for it.”

In the previous 2022 election, the Labor Party received 32.6% of the primary vote, the Liberal-National coalition got 35.7%, and other parties received 31.7%
